T3 Reflection

Term 3 is coming to an end and I learnt quite a lot of things throughout term 3. The blog writing had became more difficult as we were required to write about 200 words in each blog prompt. But it trained our expository skills and it made us more efficient in starting the thesis and finding the points. This term, we were introduced to something new, called the Reading and Reasoning. R&R is very different from what we had in primary school (comprehension) as it required a whole new level of skills. R&R requires deeper thinking and paper analysis instead of just copying from the passage. Thus, I find R&R difficult and challenging as I failed most of the assignments. I learnt that examples are very important in essays. Also, we read a book called the Merchant of Venice and it included prejudice against the Jews and Mercy and Justice. The book is about a Jew, who lended money to a Christian in which they made a bond in which if the Christian was unable to return by a deadline, he would need to have a pound of flesh cut of. The story is interesting and showed us how prejudiced people were against Jews at that time (early 60s). The book also showed Mercy and Justice, in which mercy seasons justice and people would rather have revenge than show mercy, as they would want justice for themselves. The example in the book was Shylock, the Jew, who refused to show mercy to Antonio, the Christian, and wanted justice, who was finally dealt with law and justice. I enjoyed T3 very much.

  1. I agree with what you have said. The blog writing had become more difficult, but actually it is still easy since we are no longer expected be be finishing it in the 10 minute time frame given. We were supposed to use the time for planning, which is just great training for our expository essay writing, since 10 minutes is the time that most of us take to plan our essays, and the rest of the time to write it.

For R&R, it is a much more difficult test than the normal Primary school comprehension format. In comprehension, we could always lift answers form the passage, and it required identifying and not thinking. R&R is a whole new level of difficulty, with none of the question wanting lifting of answers, even the one mark ones. It is indeed a more challenging exercise than comprehension, and though it pulls our grades down, I feel that it is still beneficial to us because it trains our critical thinking skills.

For Merchant of Venice, it has exposed me to a whole new writing style. The poetic writing style of Shakespeare is hard to understand, but after a while of reading, I could understand the beauty of the language that Shakespeare engages in. It is hard for me to imagine how one person is able to incorporate so much meaning into his plays with many figurative references to many different things. Term 3 has also been a fruitful term for me, even with my competition period being here, and I hope that Term 4 will be better.

  2. I agree with your opinions.

In term three, the expectations are higher. I feel that for R&R it is much more difficult than the comprehension test we did last year. It requires you to think more. I feel that the methods mr lundberg taught is very helpful. It ensure you find the keywords, limit the place where you will find the answer and lastly ensure you get the right answer. It helps a lot when it comes to question when you do not understand at first sight, I feel that though R&R is hard, it helps you develop critical thinking and interpretation skills.

After reading Merchant of the Vernice, i learnt what "old english" is. In the book, the words used are very different from the english we are using now. I learnt how to interpret it through the lessons and also the "No Fear" book. I learnt much more about discrimination.

All in all term has been a term that has many ups and downs for me.
